Patient Prescriptions
As a pharmacist, your role is to ensure that the prescription meets regulatory requirements and to dispense the prescribed medical cannabis product to the patient.

Medical Cannabis Patient Eligibility
Patients must have a valid prescription from an authorised medical practitioner.
Medical cannabis is typically prescribed for patients with certain medical conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and chemotherapy-induced nausea, among others.
As a pharmacist, it's crucial to understand the specific laws and regulations outlined by the TGA regarding the dispensing of medical cannabis to patients.

Record-keeping and Reporting
Detailed records of medical cannabis dispensing must be maintained in accordance with TGA regulations.
Pharmacists must accurately record information such as patient details, prescriber information, product details, and dispensing quantities.
Pharmacists must ensure compliance with storage, handling, and record-keeping requirements for controlled substances.

Storing Schedule 4 cannabis products.
If the medicinal cannabis product is a Schedule 4 product (ie, total cannabinoid content is 98% or more CBD and 2% or less of other naturally occurring cannabinoids), then it is stored in the same way as other Schedule 4 products as per relevant state/territory legal requirements.
If the medicinal cannabis (registered or unregistered) is Schedule 8, then it is stored in the same way as other controlled Schedule 8 products as per relevant state/territory legal requirements.

Storing Schedule 8 cannabis products.
Schedule 8 medicinal cannabis products that require refrigeration, eg, nabiximols (Sativex), must be stored in a lockable refrigerator that is secured to the premises of a pharmacy in the same way as a Schedule 8 safe.
Alternatively, the refrigerator containing the Schedule 8 medicinal cannabis product must be inside a locked room.
Access to the Schedule 8 safe, the refrigerator or locked room is restricted to dispensing pharmacists who have no undertakings by AHPRA on their registration to dispense controlled Schedule 8 products.
